Dodgers Take Control Against the Padres

Los Angeles broke the game open in the second inning, scoring four runs after loading the bases with two outs.

Mookie Betts drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run, before Freddie Freeman delivered a two-run single to give the Dodgers a 4-0 advantage.

Betts later scored in the fourth inning on another two-out hit by Freeman, making it 5-0.

Tommy Edman added a solo home run in the sixth inning, while Will Smith followed with a 396-foot home run in the seventh to complete the scoring at 7-0.

Dodgers Pitching Shuts Down San Diego

The Dodgers' offense was only part of the story.

Los Angeles used eight pitchers to complete the shutout, with Justin Wrobleski earning the win after taking over during a bullpen game. The Dodgers limited San Diego's offense throughout the night and recorded the fifth shutout in franchise history while using at least eight pitchers.

Roki Sasaki also made his return from the injured list. The Japanese right-hander pitched one inning, with his four-seam fastball reaching 100 mph. Sasaki had missed nearly a month because of a blister on his right middle finger.

Padres Struggle Against the Dodgers

The loss ended San Diego's five-game winning streak.

Padres stars Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado struggled at the plate, combining to go 1-for-7 with five strikeouts.

San Diego entered the game with an 87-70 record and remained in the National League wild-card race, while the Dodgers continued to strengthen their position at the top of the National League West.

Dodgers Closing In on a First-Round Bye

The victory moved Los Angeles to 97-60, just one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in Major League Baseball at the time of the game.

The Dodgers needed just one more win, or an Atlanta loss, to clinch a first-round bye into the National League Division Series. They had already secured the NL West title.
