Mohamed Salah’s Impact in Turkey: How a Photo Turned a Rock in Trabzon Into a Tourist Attraction
Mohamed Salah’s arrival at Trabzonspor has become more than a football story in Turkey. In recent weeks, the Egyptian star has also become part of an unexpected tourism and media story in Trabzon, after a simple photograph from a highland quickly turned a previously ordinary rock into a popular photo spot.
The story began when Salah visited Kurtdere Highland in Trabzon and shared photographs of himself sitting on a rock. The images spread on social media, and fans and visitors began traveling to the same location to recreate the photograph.
The attention grew enough for the Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality to install a wooden bench next to the rock, while a sign reading “Salah Yaylası”, or “Salah Highland,” was also placed in the area.
From an ordinary rock to a viral photo spot
Before Salah’s photograph, the rock at Kurtdere was not widely known outside the surrounding area. His social media post gave the location a new identity connected to one of the world’s most recognizable footballers.
Turkish media reports say visitors from different parts of Türkiye and abroad began adding Kurtdere to their travel routes after Salah’s photograph went viral.
Some visitors said they specifically wanted to see what had become known as “Salah’s Rock” and take their own photographs at the same spot.
The result was a small but striking example of how a social media post by a global sports star can change the visibility of a local destination.

Why did the municipality add a wooden bench?
As visitor interest increased, Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality teams installed a wooden bench beside the rock where Salah had posed.
The bench provides visitors with a place to rest and leave their belongings, but it has also become part of the new visual identity surrounding the site.
What was once simply a rock in a highland landscape is now associated with Salah’s name and has become a recognizable stop for visitors looking to recreate his photograph.
Salah’s influence goes beyond football
The most interesting part of the story is that Salah’s presence in Trabzon has increasingly been discussed beyond football.
According to tourism figures obtained by Anadolu Agency from Trabzon’s Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the number of Egyptian visitors who stayed at least one night in Trabzon during the first eight months of 2026 reached 5,558, compared with 4,450 during the same period in 2025 — an increase of approximately 25%.
August recorded an even larger increase, with Egyptian overnight visitors rising from 1,151 in August 2025 to 1,788 in August 2026, an increase of 55%.
Trabzon’s Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism, Tamer Erdoğan, told Anadolu Agency that Salah’s move to Trabzonspor increased the city’s visibility in Egypt and contributed to tourism interest.
The city also plans promotional activities in Egypt under the banner of “Trabzon Promotion Days” in the coming months.
At the same time, the tourism figures cannot be attributed to Salah alone. Travel developments, including the launch of direct charter flights between Cairo and Trabzon in August, also contributed to easier access between Egypt and the Turkish Black Sea city.
Turkish media turns Salah’s photo into a local story
Salah’s influence has also appeared in Turkish media coverage.
Instead of being featured only in match reports and football headlines, the Egyptian forward has become connected to Trabzon’s highlands, local tourism and social-media culture.
Turkish outlets have reported on “Salah Yaylası” and the growing interest in the rock, including visitors who traveled specifically to reproduce the photograph taken by Salah.
The story shows how a single image can move through several stages: first becoming popular on social media, then attracting media coverage, and eventually becoming part of the experience visitors seek when they travel to a location.
What does Salah mean for Trabzon?
Trabzon already has an established tourism identity built around its mountains, highlands, natural scenery and cultural attractions.
But Salah has added a new element to the city’s international visibility: a location personally visited by a globally recognized football star.
Kurtdere is therefore an interesting example of the connection between football, social media and tourism. The attraction is not simply the rock itself; it is the story attached to it.
The wooden bench becomes the latest chapter
The wooden bench installed beside Salah’s rock may seem like a small detail, but it has become a symbol of how quickly the location changed.
First came Salah’s photograph. Then came visitors recreating the image. A “Salah Yaylası” sign followed, and now there is a bench beside the famous rock.
A simple photograph from a footballer’s visit has therefore developed into a local tourism story — one that continues to attract visitors and receive attention in Turkish media.
For Trabzon, the Salah effect is no longer limited to the football pitch. His name has become part of a wider story involving media attention, tourism, social media and the city’s international image.
