Social Security COLA 2027: Why October 14 Matters and How Your Increase Is Calculated

The official Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 had not been announced as of October 12, 2026. The next important date is Wednesday, October 14: the Bureau of Labor Statistics schedules September’s Consumer Price Index report for 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

That release supplies the last month needed for the annual COLA calculation. Reporting points to an October 14 announcement, but the final percentage must come from the Social Security Administration, not from a forecast or a viral payment claim.

Why September’s inflation report matters

SSA bases COLA on the CPI-W, the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. It compares the third-quarter average with the corresponding quarter of the last year in which a COLA was determined.

The third quarter covers July, August and September. Once September’s figures arrive, the complete quarter can be compared. A single month’s headline inflation rate is therefore not automatically the benefit increase. SSA also states that no increase in the relevant index means no COLA.

What is confirmed and what is still pending?

  • Confirmed: BLS lists the September CPI release for October 14 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.
  • Confirmed: the adjustment for benefits payable in 2026 was 2.8%.
  • Pending: the official percentage for 2027 and each beneficiary’s updated benefit notice.

The 2026 rate is background information. It should not be reused as the 2027 figure.

How to estimate a monthly increase

For a simple illustration, multiply the monthly benefit by the announced percentage, then divide by 100. If the rate were 3%, a $1,000 benefit would rise by $30; $2,000 by $60; and $3,000 by $90.

These are hypothetical examples, not a forecast or an official payment promise. Use the actual announced rate when it becomes available, and rely on your personal SSA notice for the amount applicable to you.

When would the adjustment reach payments?

Under SSA’s established annual schedule, Social Security COLAs are effective for December benefits received in January. The annual announcement and the individual payment notice are separate steps; an October announcement does not mean an immediate extra October payment.

For the final announcement, use SSA’s official COLA page. SSA also provides benefit information through my Social Security. Its services are free, and its guidance warns against demands for advance fees or personal details through unsolicited messages.
