Toledo Chemical Leak: What Happened Near Progress Avenue

A hazardous-material release in North Toledo prompted evacuation and shelter-in-place orders after a tank containing glycidyl methacrylate leaked near Progress Avenue. What happened in Toledo?

The EPA says a tank of about 5,000 gallons was compromised near 1050 Progress Avenue. The chemical was identified as glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), an industrial material used in making certain plastics, paints and coatings. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department published an advisory about the release, while city authorities announced evacuation and hazmat response measures.

Associated Press reported that hundreds of residents were moved from homes because of the potential danger, including concern about fire or an explosion as the material reacted. The city’s initial incident notice and the EPA profile describe the response; this article does not assume that the same orders remain active now.

What should residents do?

People in or near the affected area should follow current instructions from Toledo Fire & Rescue, the city and the Lucas County Health Department. Check the city’s incident updates and the department’s public-health advisory before traveling through the area. If an emergency is happening, use local emergency services rather than relying on social-media reposts.

GMA is an industrial chemical, and exposure risks depend on amount, route and duration. The county health department’s advisory is the source for local health guidance; readers should consult it or a medical professional about symptoms or exposure.
