Messi’s Atlanta masterclass: two stunning goals in four minutes

Lionel Messi delivered another decisive performance for Inter Miami, scoring twice in four second-half minutes and helping create the opener in a 3–1 away win over Atlanta United on Saturday, October 17. The result extended Miami’s winning streak to three matches and put the spotlight back on the qualities that have defined Messi’s extraordinary career: vision, close control and calm finishing.

Inter Miami took the lead just before halftime. In the 45th minute, Germán Berterame met Luis Suárez’s cross with a header. Messi had helped build the attack, and the contribution also brought him to 15 assists for the MLS regular season. He became the first player in league history to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive seasons.

Messi then took over after the break. In the 56th minute, he collected the ball on the right, carried it toward the middle and exchanged a quick pass with Berterame before moving into the box. His low left-footed shot found the net. Four minutes later, Suárez threaded a pass through the defense. Messi accelerated into space, slipped past a defender and finished with his left foot to make it 3–0. Atlanta pulled one back from Fafà Picault’s penalty in the 89th minute, but Miami held on for the win.

The brace raised Messi’s 2026 MLS regular-season total to 25 goals, keeping him at the top of the league scoring chart. It also took his senior career tally to 936 official goals for club and country, according to post-match career-goal tallies. That leaves him 64 goals short of the 1,000 mark. Totals can vary slightly depending on which matches a provider counts, so the figure refers to senior official goals rather than every friendly or youth appearance.

Messi’s greatness is about more than a milestone. Across more than two decades at the highest level, he has been a scorer and a creator, capable of changing a match with a pass, a dribble or a single moment of precision. Against Atlanta, he did all three: contributed to the opener, produced two individual finishes and repeatedly gave Miami a clear attacking route.

Inter Miami’s next test is an away match against Red Bull New York on October 24. With four regular-season games remaining after the Atlanta victory, Messi also has a chance to add to his league-leading goal and assist totals.
